. puffer fish for chris christie. as you point out the romney campaign had serious concerns with chris christie's background. one of the reasons they didn't pick him. were you surprised christie has gotten such a big part of the buzz surrounding this book particularly as he heads to the polls tomorrow or folks head to the polls to potentially vote for him? >> look, he's a big exciting figure in american politics. there aren't many people like him. he's on his way tomorrow to be re-elected by a resounding margin. the fact there's focus isn't a surprise to either of us. what we found reporting the story, mitt romney's consideration of governor christie. what we found surprising was first of all he considered him and then rejected him because he thought there were too many aspects of his past which had been looked out a little in new jersey, in context of the politics there. governor romney said, look, in the national race everything is different. it will get a lot of scrutiny. he didn't want the distraction sarah palin caused when she was selected by john mccain. he rejected governor chr
orchestrated by an even less popular and highly divided republican party. the political fates of chris christie in new jersey and ken cuccinelli in virginia, the two republicans in the running have a lot to tell us about just what kind of republican can get elected these days. now, on the one hand, you have christie, who, if recent polls showing him clobbering his democratic opponent, barbara what's her name by a 19-point margin are any indication, it's the kind who wins elections. correction, the kind of republican who can win elections in a blue state that gave president obama 58% of the vote in 2012. now, on paper, chris christie is as conservative as they come. opposition to reproductive rights? check. he defunded planned parenthood and refused to fund new jersey state family planning centers. standing strong against marriage equality? check. he recently backed down from his efforts to block same-sex marriage from moving the forward in new jersey, but only after a long, long fight to keep it from happening. advancing economic austerity policies, check. opposing organized labor, check. suppr

in california wouldn't take their cues more from a state like new jersey, where you see with chris christie on the verge of doing. i wanted to circle back to you had been talking earlier about the hispanic problem for republicans. just to clarify what that meant, you're saying in terms of this is a problem for the republican party, that it is struggling to relate to and communicate with hispanic voters? >> a problem for the republican party writ large. mark my words, just as the obama campaign very effectively drove a wedge, women and millennials in 2012, hillary clinton will do it in 2016. republicans have three years to get their act together or not. >> the other thing, i look at the flip side of this, the republicans sort of collapse in the state of california it amazing too what the state emerged in terms of being a democratic bastion. the opportunity to exist now for democrats have this two-thirds majority in the state legislature in california. you have a democratic governor. jerry brown who knows a thing or two about being governor of california. in california, emerging, for years, i
